Women's history of pop

Pop music belongs to women as much as anyone, even if there are still gatekeepers. And women's history and perspectives are as important as anyone else's, even if they're different.

I tend to resist anything that’s about “women in rock”, when it just lumps people together because of their sex. But I still think we need a “women’s history of pop”, when it comes to talking about specifics.

So I’m doing my bit to amplify some of the stories. Maybe I’ll tell you mine one day.

Meanwhile, here are some of my posts about women's history of pop.

Here to be heard: the Slits documentary
In which I go to the pictures, and get cross about Don Letts mansplaining punk.

Women at the BBC
In which I watch the telly, and get cross that some people think Bob Harris is more important than Anne Nightingale.

Book review: The Lost Women of Rock Music
I read a book, in which Helen McCookerybook asks: “How could the music I had been involved with have felt so important and revolutionary at the time, yet have made no impact at all on the history of rock’n’roll?”
