Case Histories soundtrack

UPDATE: If you are looking for the songs from Case Histories Series 2 (broadcast in the UK in May/June 2013), click here: Case Histories Soundtrack Series 2.

ORIGINAL POST BELOW:

I love Kate Atkinson's books, partly because she's a good writer and partly because I can't help wondering about the lost sisters. They are the thread in Case Histories but the theme goes back to Behind the Scenes at the Museum, her first novel. And because I also have a lost sister, I wonder.

And I loved the BBC's 'Case Histories' adaptation, even though it falls into the common category of 'not as good as the book'. I've got to confess a lot of it's to do with Jason Isaacs. I never imagined Jackson Brodie as quite so hunky when I read the books... but I'm not complaining.

The other reason for loving the series is the soundtrack. Who could fail to love a programme that highlights work by Lucinda Williams, Nanci Griffith and Iris DeMent? The music has attracted plenty of comment - so when are the BBC going to release the soundtrack album?

I've searched for a list of the songs but all I can find is on the iPlayer credits. So, before they disappear from view, I've compiled a list as a public service. I intend to investigate further the stuff I hadn't heard before. I recommend you do the same.

And it all ties in. Sweet Old World is the soundtrack for my own lost sister. Thank you Lucinda Williams. Thank you Kate Atkinson.

  3. Here I sit, once again, squinting at the tiny scrolling end credits of a movie or TV show, searching for some information about a song I liked ... the 5 or 10 seconds of it in the middle of the movie that left me guessing about the song name or artist, and, and ... nothing! I can find the name of the catering truck driver (only right I suppose) but nothing about the music. Why is that? Anyway, thanks for doing this work. I knew most, but not all, of the artists in Case Histories and was surprised and excited to hear them in a British production. Nice to know people over there are aware of the likes of Iris DeMent, Lucinda Williams, and Gillian Welch.

  4. Thanks Robert. You're right, the music is the thing I always want to know about at the end of a show, and the one that gets neglected. But everyone was talking about the music in Case Histories, so I hope that Iris, Lucinda, Gillian et al got a few more fans from it! But there are a lot of us here who like them already.

  5. Thanks for posting the song credits for Case Histories. The series just premiered in the US. I was struck by the song selections - all female singer songwriters, singing sad songs. I recognised some of them, but looked in vain at the credits to fill in the gaps. The information was not listed on the series website either.

Anyway, thanks for ferreting them out. I'm going to have a further look at your website to see what it's all about.

    Thanks,

    Claes

  6. Thanks so much for posting this invaluable information, otherwise unavailable anywhere else. I thought the adaptation of Kate Atkinson's books, which I had read, was excellent, but it was odd that the end credits failed to identify the music used in the episodes. I recognized only Mary Gauthier's "Mercy Now" but have been able to order the others. You've done us a great service. Joe

  7. Thank you for this!! The first episode (both parts) aired last night here in the States, and my husband and I loved the music. I recognized some of the artists, and was introduced to others, and waited (like Robert, above) for the credits to reveal the musicians. :(

  8. Amazing list - not sure about Kylie or Zero 7, and who is Kris Delmhorst? Otherwise, an impressive list of female singer/songwriters who usually fly under the radar. True, Lucinda had her 15 minutes of fame, but the others are sadly ignored by most of the listening public here in the States. Maybe that will change!

  9. Thanks for digging up the music credits. I've been lucky enough to see many of the artists live, and am happy to see that their songs have crossed the pond, so that more people can enjoy them.

  10. Thank you for compiling this! We are only 4 episodes in so far in the US. I am so excited to be watching a program that shares my taste in music. Kris Delmhorst deserves a wider audience- she is extremely talented & sadly under exposed. Thanks again.

  12. Hello new friends and thanks for all the comments. So glad that viewers in the States are enjoying Case Histories - and the music.

  13. Greetings all. I'd dearly love to know the song and artist performing in episode 2 as Gloria is stripping the bed. It doesn't seem to match any of the songs in the list. Thanks, Wes

  14. I thought everyone visiting this page might like the following list to supplement both the songs used in the episodes and the playlist from the book (link up above). This is the playlist from the CD that Kate Atkinson herself burned for screenwriter Ashley Pharaoh when he was hired to adapt "Case Histories":

    Mercy Now - Mary Gauthier
Jesus, Take The Wheel - Carrie Underwood
    Be Careful - Patty Griffin
Laid A Highway - Tift Merritt
Leaving This Life - Lori McKenna
Sunday Morning Coming Down - Gretchen Wilson
Drowning In You - Gretchen Peters
Not Long For This World - Kelly Willis
    Cowboy Boots - Kendel Carson
Your Sister Cried - Mary Gauthier

  15. I tried to post this yesterday and failed: Thanks so much for this information! In addition to these songs from the filmed episodes and the songs mentioned in "Case Histories" (link up above), I discovered a blog by screenwriter Ashley Pharaoh in which he gives the following playlist - from a CD that Kate Atkinson burned for him to listen to while adapting "Case Histories" for television:

    Mercy Now - Mary Gauthier
Jesus, Take The Wheel - Carrie Underwood
    Be Careful - Patty Griffin
Laid A Highway - Tift Merritt
Leaving This Life - Lori McKenna
Sunday Morning Coming Down - Gretchen Wilson
Drowning In You - Gretchen Peters
Not Long For This World - Kelly Willis
    Cowboy Boots - Kendel Carson
Your Sister Cried - Mary Gauthier

It's a great selection & exciting to get it from the author herself. All songs are readily available save the Gretchen Wilson cover, which is out of print. It can still be found on Amazon.com on CD.

  16. Please allow me to add my thanks and appreciation to the others. We just discovered this series. The song fragments added so much to the overall excellent production that it is a shame no credit was given.

    Best regards from Dallas

  18. Thanks for this list. I had never heard any of these artists (I mainly listen to jazz), but I'm going to start tomorrow with Mary Gauthier. Thank you!

  19. Thanks for the list! I know I'm last to the conversation, but does anyone know what the piano instrumental playing in the middle is? I can't find anything about it anywhere. It sounds so familiar, but I can't put my finger on it!

  20. I did the same (compiling a list) for "Call the Midwife" so I am truly grateful that you have done one for "Case Histories". This is truly my kind of music. Hope to see the list for Series 2.

  21. There was a great song in Started Early, Took My Dog but I didn't recognise it. I hope to find out. At present there is nothing on the BBC website about the music for the new series. I've written to them to ask for it!

  22. @olderthanelvis

I KNOW!!! I love that song and can't get it out of my head!

  23. I'm just wondering what the theme tune is... What is the BBC's problem with listing music they are using in an episode? on some programmes the information comes up on text 888, but that means watching it with deaf subtitles :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. The song at the end of the episode Took My Dog is a track by Sarah Mclachlan, it's called The Answer.

    Hope this helps!

  25. As Series 2 moves along will you post any updstes on those tunes? I've had some luck googling the lyrics as they go past on the subtitles. For instance Nikki Forova-Between Your Eyes and Mine came up tonight for the second episode of Season 2. And there was Mary Gauthier's Slip of the Tongue tonight also. But I missed the lyric or title for the Eliza Gilykson song. Did anyone else catch it?
